About Beer

About Beer in Devon

In May 2021, HemingwayDesign were appointed by Beer Parish Council (using the Coastal Community grant) to develop a Vision and feasibility study for three key seafront opportunity sites – Jubilee gardens, the play area and Charlie’s Yard. HemingwayDesign has now produced an online survey based on proposals in the Vision Document.  The survey will be disseminated as widely as possible amongst the business and local community and visitors. Please use the link below to take part in the survey (which also includes a link to the draft Vision Document).  The survey is also available on the Parish Council website.

HemingwayDesign will collect and analyse the survey data and reassess the original Vision Document accordingly.  Further to this, HemingwayDesign will visit Beer during the Easter holidays to provide an on-site consultation day and the results of this will feed into the final Vision Document which will ultimately be presented to the village for approval.

The proposals in the Vision Document are not specifically tied to the asset transfer proposals for Beer but are general aspirations for the development of village assets.

Beer Community

Beer is a living, breathing community of people who work in the surrounding area and who bring up their families here, and of people who have come to Beer to spend the rest of their lives here. They understand that their active participation in this community helps to keep Beer what it is and always has been – a beautiful place for people to be in. It continually wins awards for its beauty, including a “Gold in the South West in Bloom” awards in 2018.

Beer Amenities

Local people run the shops and pubs and businesses that are all individual with their own character. There’s food available of all kinds, from fish shops and beach cafés selling sandwiches of locally caught fresh crab that are unforgettable, to restaurants offering world cuisine. Fishing boats, deck chairs, beach huts, pots of tea and Devon cream teas – there’s everything here that you remember about great holidays. With access to the water for dinghies and paddleboards and access to mile upon mile of countryside for walking, Beer is an ideal base for people who want to be active in their day-to-day life and on holiday.

Location of Beer

And you’re right in the middle of some of Britain’s most beautiful scenery. The South West Coastal Path runs through Beer and along its cliff tops. It’s a corner of the East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. In Beer you get a sense of living history, because it’s where the Jurassic Coast starts, where the Romans came to quarry stone, where fisherman have earned their living for centuries – and still do.

Come and visit Beer and find out for yourself why it’s Devon’s Best Kept Secret.
